Meet the Artists

Jofrey

Hey there, my name is Jofrey, and I am a student from Tanzania. I love Korea.

I think it’s amazing that North and South Korea could be connected.

I was curious about the colours of the Korean flag, so I asked my teacher about it. The colours of the Taegeuk symbol and the four trigrams on the flag felt very harmonious to me. So, using Korea’s traditional colours and lines, I created a dynamic shape to express the beautiful connection of the Korean Peninsula.

Sumin An

I express my longing for the old home in North Korea that I can never return to through dynamic shifts in colour. My memories and the imaginative aspects of this longing intertwine with the present, manifesting outwardly. Drawing upon the nostalgia and memories of a life experienced since childhood, I use painting as a medium to express my identity. Through my artwork, I reaffirm my sense of self and confront the cherished home I deeply miss.

Young Doo Joung

We should dream of the future versions of ourselves that we have yet to meet beyond who we are now. In the time that has not yet arrived, we will be able to greet each other as better versions of ourselves. The future will provide us with the healing energy to overcome our wounds, and through that energy, it will open up new possibilities.

Our Story

Since 2013, HE:ART has provided and supported art education for global citizenship to North Korean defector students and second-generation North Korean defector students at schools such as Yeomyung School and South-North Love School. Our goal is to help participants receive and return what they have received by supporting students in developing countries, growing into global citizens who can contribute to international development and lead the cause of reunification. Moreover, the students in developing countries who benefit from their help also understand global citizenship and contribute to Korean reunification as part of international development. Through these activities, students are trained not only to receive but also to give.

For instance, through the artistic activities and exhibitions of North Korean defector students who participated in the HE:ART art education program, we purchased 20 acres of land in Mwanga, Tanzania, to support the establishment of a school, the installation of a water tank, and the construction of a health centre for the local community. In 2018, the North Korean defector students, having become adults, returned as teachers and provided art education to Tanzanian students. One of the Tanzanian students who took those classes gained an understanding of Korean reunification, peace, and global unity and later went to study in the United States.

This seventh exhibition will feature works not only by student participants from Tanzania and Laos but also by professional artists from diverse backgrounds, including a North Korean defector, a South Korean, and an Indian, all under the theme of ‘Korean reunification.’

The Ministry of Unification is hosting the event, which is vital to the Korean reunification process. In collaboration with the Ministry of Unification and Moravian & Co., the event will include a talk concert on North Korean human rights, further solidifying efforts to raise awareness at Harvard Square. In Germany, a classical concert for Korean reunification will be held in Leipzig, where HE:ART North Korean defector artist Sumin An will deliver a message of hope, freedom, and the journey toward liberty.
